How to Grow Chia Seeds

Did you know that chia seeds are easy to grow beyond the clay heads? Well, they are and they are healthy too.

To begin the planting process, you will first come up with your planting medium.  This can be as simple as cheesecloth or burlap.  Once you have selected your planting medium, the next step is to cut the correct amount of planting medium.  This will depend on the amount of seed you want to plant.  If you have up to 1 tablespoon of seed to plant, choose a 5 inch square of planting medium.  If you have ½ cup, take the planting medium size up to 11 inches square.  On the other hand, if you have up to 1 cup of seeds, choose a planting medium of 11 inches by 22 inches.

chiaWhen it comes to cutting your planting medium, make sure that you cut two pieces the same size.  The reason for this is the fact that one planting medium will be planted upon and the other will be a cover.  After the two pieces of planting medium have been cut, soak them in water.

Saturating the planting medium with water will not take very much time.  Once it is moistened, take one piece and wring it out.  You want the planting medium to be moist but not dripping wet.  Next, lay it out flat on a plate and begin to plant.  Spread the seed out so that no seeds are touching.  Once the whole area is planted, take the other piece of planting medium and wring out.  Top the planted planting medium with the other piece of planting medium.

Move the planted planting medium to a warm location that is kept around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  At this point, do not put the planted planting medium in a sunny location.

Mist the planting medium often.  Once the seeds begin to germinate, move the planted medium to a sunny location.  The germinate time will occur between two and four days.

After the planted medium has been moved to a sunny location, you will need to water more often.  Now, you can harvest the microgreens.  If you want to harvest the seeds, continue to take care of the chia seedlings until they bloom.  Once the blooms have been spent, you can harvest the seeds by removing the seed heads.  Place these in a paper bag and shake to separate the seed from the spent flower head.
